Daily Bytes: The Future of the Social Web – And Do You Fit In?

Today’s Daily Bytes focuses the future of the social web and questions if your company fits in?  I hope so after reading a very thoughtful piece from Brian Solis looking at the future of the social web.  Kyle Lacy then looks at the reasons for not deploying social media in your business.  From my perspective, if you don’t fit in with the social web, you will do so at your future business peril!  Finally it is Friday and I feature HubSpot’s top inbound marketing stories of the week.

The Future of the Social Web

Brian Solis, analyzes Forrester Research’s April 2009 on The Future of the Social Web.  As Brian points out, the report looks at the ongoing evolution of the “social web” in five stages as illustrated below:

Timing of the Social Web Eras

Brian agrees with Forrester that we are now living in the third phase with much development to come in the next several years that will have significant implications for companies and their relationships with customers.  With the dawn of social commerce, when friends use the social web to recommend and influence consumer purchases, Brian points out the growing need for Social Relationship Management ["SRM"].  Brian has some distinct points of view on what this means and what it can mean for your business.  And it does mean that companies will need to become social to survive.

10 Reasons You Should Not Be on Social Media

As a humorous counter-balance to Brian’s meaty piece, Kyle Lacy lists ten reasons why you should not be on social media.  Of course, before deciding to not participate in social media per Kyle’s list, I hope you read the first post from Brian Solis!

Top 5 Inbound Marketing Stories of the Week:  Give Away Free Content

This weeks HubSpot Recap starts off with a funny post from Andy Sernovitz about how giving away free contact him gave him a lot of free publicity.  Having spent much of my career working with big media companies, giving away free content is an anathema to most of them.  In fact, they get into legal battles like Viacom v. YouTube, when free distribution of their content gets them more publicity for free!  Other posts in the recap this week include 10 of the best social media tools for entrepreneurs [a great list], how social media accounts for 18 % of information search [that number has to keep growing], 9 marketing lessons from the pink ribbon breast cancer campaign [a great presentation] and finally a post highlighted on Wednesday in Daily Bytes about the issue of company ownership of employee social media content [a big issue that will continue to grow].  So some great reading for the weekend.

Have a great weekend and see you next week!
