Daily Bytes: Personal Branding, Business Development, Paid Search & PR

Today’s Daily Bytes focuses on the need for you to brand yourself first, the process of business development, the importance of paid search and three free publicity tools.

Brand Yourself Before Someone Else Brands You

Whenever I go to meet someone for the first time, I typically “google” them to learn more about them.  I know people do the same about me.  So forget first impressions – first impressions are now digital impressions, BEFORE a meeting even happens!  So what do you do to control that first digital impression?  Personal branding expert, Dan Schwabel, puts together a great post explaining some of the simple steps that we all can do to make sure that we brand ourselves before someone else deos.

Understanding business development

Business development can be a real opportunity to add value to a company beyond its core business.  There are lots of great examples of business development deals done right, e.g. Starbuck’s licening their name to an ice cream vendor or Apple and Nike making a device that integrates your iPod in your sneakers.  The outsider can look at these deals and question what is the secret sauce to doing business development right?  Seth Godin, in this post, points out there is “no cookie cutter grind it out approach to making it work.”  Yet, he does list 12 tactical steps on how to do it better.

Seven Compelling Reasons That Now Is The Time To Ramp Up Paid Search

Paid search comprises 50 % of all digital marketing in most major markets, but there is still a lot of room to grow, with many businesses still not embracing its benefits.  This article from Search Engine Land acknowledges concerns – click fraud, lack of internal knowledge, or a reliance on organic search through building links.  At the same time, there are developments in paid search that are eliminating the concerns, making it easier to manage and providing tangible rsults.

3 More Free Publicity Tools

Public relations is tough to justify for start-ups and the first to be cut expense for many existing businesses in this period.  This post from StartUp Nation looks at three free tools that businesses can use to enhance their promotion activities at this time.

I hope you enjoy these daily “digital bytes”.  I look forward to your comments on how I might offer better posts that can better help you with your business endeavors and initiatives.  In the meantime, thanks for reading and I look forward to communicating with you again tomorrow.
