Daily Bytes: Weekly To Do’s
Posted on Mon, Nov 23, 2009
Good Morning! While it is a holiday week, there are still lots of things to consder doing – if not this week, then next week, after you wake up from the post-triptophan turkey overdose! Today’s Daily Bytes focuses on Facebook pages, integrating social media with your traditional marketing efforts, and a little bit of inspiration compliments of my colleague Jason Blumer.
Facebook Page for Your Business: On Facebook, People Have Profiles, Brands Have Pages
Dan Zarella, a social media marketing and viral marketing scientist, does a guest post in the HubSpot blog today and points out that the recent Business.com survey (discussed in Daily Bytes on November 13th) of 3,000 businesses revealed that 83 % of the respondents used Facebook. Despite the heavy usage of Facebook, there are varying results achieved. Dan suggests that some businesses may confuse business usage with personal usage. As an individual, our profiles reveal our personality, including insights on our families, our schools, our work, our favorite movies, our favorite quotes, our recreational activities, amongst other things. Businesses, on the other hand, are not personalities – they are brands. And as a result, their participation on Facebook needs to be about their page and not their profile or a group. If you set up your Facebook presence as a profile or group, Dan recommends that you switch over. And if you have not yet set up your Facebook presence, make sure you have set it up as a page. He also provides a link to a number of Hubspot resources that can be helpful to your managing your Facebook business presence. You may want to add checking them out to your To Do List this week.

Finally, Dan’s book, The Social Media Marketing Book has just been published by O’Reilly Publishing. In his blog post today, he writes that he wrote it as “a very tactical, hands-on introduction to a wide range of social media marketing technologies, platforms, sites and opportunities.” He also provides his video promoting the book. While I don’t believe traditional advertising is dead [see blog reference below], I am looking forward to reading Dan’s book for insights on how to use social media more effectively.
